Dorothy “Dottie” J. Crawford of Buhl, ID passed away in her sleep at Bridgeview Estates on February 27, 2019 at the age of 100.
Dorothy Jewel James Crawford was born on September 04, 1918, in Albany, NY to Charles EB James and Ruth C. Coleman James. Dorothy was the eldest of eight children. Dorothy was baptized into the Methodist Episcopal Church on July 13, 1919. During her childhood years, Dottie attended school and graduated from Endicott High School in Endicott, NY.
After high school, Dottie worked alongside her father in his shoe store in Endicott, where she learned bookkeeping, her lifetime profession. She went to work for IBM in Endicott, NY and met Frederick Robert Crawford.
Dottie and Bob were married on October 07, 1938. They relocated to Baltimore, Maryland and soon after, daughter, Joyce Estelle was born, followed by son, Robert Lindsey “Lin”. A few years after Lin was born, the family relocated back to NY, near Poughkeepsie, and settled their property while building their home from the ground up. Eventually, Bob and Dottie were divorced and by the mid 1960’s, Dottie had met who was to be the love and partner of her life, John Winterling. Dottie and John were together until his death in 1993.
Dottie worked for various companies in Poughkeepsie, Pleasant Valley, and Millbrook, NY as a bookkeeper until her retirement in the late 1980’s. When she retired from bookkeeping, she then took on a part time job as an assistant post master in Verbank, NY until 1993 upon John’s passing. She relocated to Florida and moved to Idaho to be closer to her family.
Dottie is survived by her children, daughter, Joyce (Larry) Canty of Buhl, Idaho and son, R. Lindsey Crawford of Pearl City, Hawaii; her youngest brother, Richard (Carole) James of Endicott, New York; her 5 grandchildren, Kimberly (Clay) Burkhalter of Filer, Idaho, Bridget (Bill) Bottcher of Tyler, Texas, John Deane of Twin Falls, Idaho, Leland and Bradley Crawford of Pearl City, Hawaii; her 6 great grandchildren, Brandon and Benjamin Burkhalter of Filer, Idaho, Tyler and Devin Lindroth of Port Charlotte, Florida, and Jeremy and Evie Deane of Chatham, New York. Dottie is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews throughout the United States. Dottie was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved, John; 6 of her siblings Harold, Burdell, Peg, Beverly, Carol, and Helen; and her great granddaughter, Megan Burkhalter. Rest peacefully, Grammie. Your 100 years of lifetime history will not be forgotten.
Per Dottie’s wishes, she will be cremated and returned to New York to be laid to rest with her beloved, John. Dottie’s family requests that flowers or charitable donations be held until arrangements are scheduled and finalized for internment in New York.
