Esther Mae Bernardo passed away peacefully in her sleep in Twin Falls, Idaho on February 13, 2018 at the age of 94.
Esther was born in San Mateo California on January 2, 1924 to John and Lena Souza. She grew up on the family ranch in San Gregorio with her sister Helen and her brothers Norman and John. After graduating from Half Moon Bay High School she moved to San Mateo to attend junior college. Esther married John F. Bernardo in September of 1944 and they settled in San Mateo where they raised their sons. Esther was a committed volunteer throughout her life, donating her time and talents to organizations such as the San Mateo County Historical Association, Hillsdale United Methodist Church, and the Filoli Mansion and Gardens. She was a committed member of Hillsdale United Methodist Church for over 70 years.
Esther loved to spend time walking her dogs, gardening, and visiting her ranch in San Gregorio. She will be remembered as a selfless, altruistic wife and mother with a quiet inner strength. She was a friend to many, always supportive and encouraging, always generous and kind.
Esther is survived by her sons Michael (Penny) of Filer, Idaho and Dan (Pam) of Moscow, Idaho; her grandchildren, Steven (Rebekah) Flaming, Kenneth (Hanna) Flaming and three great grandchildren, Alice Flaming, Lucy Flaming and William Flaming. Esther was preceded in death by her husband John F. Bernardo.
Donations in memory of Esther can be made to the San Mateo County Historical Association or Hillsdale United Methodist Church.
A memorial service for Esther will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday the 24th of February at the Hillsdale United Methodist Church 303 West 36th Ave. San Mateo.
