Cornelius Lanting

November 21, 1926 — December 18, 2016

Cornelius “Cornie” Marten Lanting, age 90, of Twin Falls passed away at Hospice Visions Hospice Home on December 17, 2016 of complications from Parkinson’s Disease.

Cornie was born on the family ranch in Rogerson, Idaho on November 21, 1926 to John Lanting and Grace (Visser) Lanting, Dutch immigrants.  He was one of nine children and attended Rogerson Elementary School and Hollister High School where he played basketball and graduated as the class valedictorian in 1944.  He then attended Utah State University and the College of Idaho, and on March 24, 1949; he married his high school sweetheart, Donna (Schnitker) Lanting in Elko, Nevada.  Cornie and Donna were married for 67 years until her passing in April of this year.

After his marriage, Cornie farmed for many years on the Salmon Tract and worked campaigns at the Amalgamated Sugar Factory in Twin Falls.  In 1968, he quit farming and began working as a chemist at the Amalgamated Sugar Factory Lab.  He later became their factory services manager supervising human resources, safety, and the yard crew.  He retired in 1992, and he and Donna moved to Twin Falls.

Cornie was a good man and a lifelong servant of others.  He was a member of the Hollister Community Presbyterian Church and served in many capacities over the years.  He was also a tenor in the church choir and performed numerous duets with Homer Roberts.  In addition, Cornie served as chairman on the Twin Falls County Planning and Zoning Commission and as master of ceremonies for many church, school, and grange events in Hollister.  Cornie’s service continued at CSI where he and Donna made caramel popcorn balls as a labor of love to support student athletes for over a decade.

Cornie was an avid CSI athletics fan.  He and Donna traveled to many out-of-town games including the Junior College National Championships in Salinas and Hutchison, Kansas.  In addition, they were involved in the CSI Booster Club, served as booster parents for students athletes from all over the world, and continued to stay in touch with their students after they graduated.

Cornie belonged to the Hollister Grange, the Jackpot Golf Club, and the Twin Falls Blue Birds Good Sam Club.  He enjoyed bowling, camping, golfing, playing cards, and watching football on TV.  One of biggest highlights of Cornie’s life was visiting relatives in Holland with his son, Greg.  He also shared a love of the ocean and trips to the Oregon Coast with his daughter, Eileen.  In addition, Cornie and Donna enjoyed many trips with Leroy and Maureen Fleenor.

Cornie is survived by his daughter, Eileen Lanting of Buhl; his son, Greg (Wendy) Lanting of Twin Falls; his former daughter-in-law, Marcia  Lanting of Twin Falls; his sisters, Abeldina (Dom) Greco of New Jersey and Cleo Fehling of California; his sister-in-law, Verna Lanting of Moscow; and his adopted grandchildren, Jodie, Justin, Kim, Todd, Chase, Annie, Heather, and Jason; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His three brothers preceded him in death: William (Marguerite) Lanting, Peter Lanting, and Jacob Lanting and three of his five sisters: Anna (Jack) Budden, Petra Nella (Al) Bryne, and Adriana (Paul) Kunkel.
