Raymond Mackay (Mack) Mitchell, age 70, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2016, at the Oak Creek Care Center in Kimberly, Idaho.
Mack, as he was known by most, and his twin sister, Monica, were born in Eugene, Oregon in 1945 to Barbara and Ray Mitchell. The twins joined their two older sisters, Barbara and Fran to complete this young family. The Mitchells later moved to Wenatchee, Washington where Mack lived until graduating from Wenatchee High School.
Mack grew up loving the outdoors and hiking with his family into high mountain lakes, huckleberry picking in the fall, fishing on opening day with his Dad, and bow and arrow hunting with his Dad and sister, Monica.
Next to family, books were his greatest love and he collected and avidly read books on a wide range of topics throughout his life. Wherever he traveled or lived along the west coast from Seattle to San Francisco, he would visit libraries, haunt used book stores, and scour garage sales for out of print or first edition books that caught his eye.
Mack served in the navy during the Viet Nam War and then moved to San Francisco shortly after his discharge where he lived for many years working in various aspects of the food service industry.
After moving to Twin Falls in 2006, Mack enjoyed the opportunity to participate in special projects at the Presbyterian Church and the Twin Falls Center for the Arts. His family and friends will miss his sense of humor, his love of the outdoors, his gentle spirit and good nature.
In his immediate family, Mack was preceded in death by his father, Ray, and mother, Barbara. He is survived by his sisters, Barbara Frost, Hilo, Hawaii; Fran (Allan) Frost, Twin Falls, Idaho; and Monica Yamamoto-Hoffman, Priest River, Idaho, along with many dear cousins and nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Oak Creek Care Center for their compassionate and loving care of Mack for the past four years. Their kindness and thoughtfulness have been greatly appreciated by our family.
A private family celebration of life will follow. Arrangements are under the direction of Parke’s Magic Valley Funeral Home in Twin Falls. Those wishing to share condolences may do so at www.magicvalleyfuneralhome.com
