Glenn Elwood Baum

February 11, 1926 — November 18, 2015

Glenn Elwood Baum, our “you’re a miracle Grampa”, was born February 11, 1926 to Livora May Willis and Earl Lester Baum, in La Grande, Oregon. He completed his earthly sojourn early, early Wednesday morning, November 18, 2015 at St. Lukes in Twin Falls, Idaho due to a combination of symptoms related to living an exceptionally full and service-oriented life.

Glenn is survived by his beloved wife of forty-five years, Netta Rachel Cardon Baum, five daughters: Glenda Baum Moyes (Dan), Colleen Giles Moyes (David) Jan Baum Lambert, Carolyn Baum-Buttorff (Mark) and Laurie Denise Baum(Deb Kraus), two sons: David Giles (Nita) and Craig Giles (Evyon), and many wonderful grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great- grandchildren.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Livora Willis Baum in 1975 and Earl Lester Baum in 1988, his only brother Vern Elwin Baum (Battle of the Bulge in WWII, 12/1945), one daughter Kay Giles Fries (2014) and one son Robert Cardon Giles (2013) (Sandy).

Considering becoming an attorney, Glenn attended the University of Idaho following High School.  Deciding he preferred outdoor life, Glenn returned after his first year to farm with his father in Jerome County, 7 ½ miles east of Tipperary Corner.  Through his curiosity, work, mail-order and college classroom electronics classes, and on-the job training Glenn developed skills though which he could build, repair and maintain homes, automobiles, and a wide variety of electronic equipment from tube radios and televisions, to reel-to-reel tape recorders, to modern production sound & lighting systems.

He enjoyed personal notes of thanks from performers and organizations such as the Carpenters, Sherrie Lewis, Nitty-Gritty-Dirt Band, Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, The Fine Arts Departments at the College of Southern Idaho, Local private music, dance and drama instructors, The Future Farmers of America, Four H, Political Parties, Traveling Fine Arts Performers, CSI Basket Ball fans, and many, many others.

Glenn delighted in bringing into creation ideas which Netta could conceive in their numerous remodeling projects including their homes on Park Drive and South Blue Lakes Blvd., projects for family members, and their haven of happiness cabin on Elk Lake Road off the Little Salmon River near Riggins.     Glenn was an avid amateur photographer. The joy of their journeys through life and their travels is well documented in many, many photos of the beautiful trails of nature they traveled, with an occasional person included here and there.

Raised a member of no church, but with the loving influence of a mother who lived with Christ in her heart, he was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1949, and remained a faithful member throughout his life.  His last determined act was to listen completely through the audio edition of the newest Ensign he received from Salt Lake upon returning home Tuesday afternoon after a minor medical set-back early Sunday morning.     Glenn soldiered through numerous severe medical challenges in his retirement years, including challenges to both body and mind.  His stamina and recovery from numerous surgeries often surprised both medical staff and his family members alike.  Through everything, Netta, his eternal companion and loving wife, became his caregiver, attentively and meticulously meeting home care and dietary need; setting him as the number one priority in her life; through her love sacrificing much of her own retirement rest to his care and comfort. His length and enjoyment of life was directly linked to her watchful care.

His intellect is again whole. He is enjoying visiting with our brother Robert and sister Kay, his parents and brother, and numerous loved ones and personal friends.     We are comforted in his release from pain, his restoration to his full stature and spirit, and in our faith in the redeeming power of Christ to heal spirits, and bring our Glenn home to Him.

In lieu of flowers donations are suggested to the Humanitarian Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which provides relief and assistance world-wide to peoples of all or no denominations. (Donation acknowledgement cards are not sent.) Gratitude is expressed to a multitude of kind and thoughtful medical personal who have cared for Glenn through his retirement years.
