Shirley Joan Squire

September 4, 1936 — January 23, 2015

Shirley Joan Squire, 78, of Twin Falls, Idaho, and previously of Hector, Minnesota passed away peacefully with family by her side on Friday, January 23rd, 2015 at St. Luke's Magic Valley Hospital. Shirley was born of John and Alice Olson on September 4th, 1936 in Erdahl Township, Grant County Minnesota. She grew up in a beautiful farm home surrounded by acres of land, where she helped her father and brothers bale hay and take care of their livestock. Shirley loved all animals and would often tell the story of how her father would be sure to give the horses, cows, goats and chickens extra feed on Christmas Day. After graduating from Evansville High School in 1954, Shirley enrolled at Moorhead State University where she received a teaching degree. While attending college, she met Devon Charles Squire from Glenwood, Minnesota. They married June 9, 1957 in a small church in Hoffman, Minnesota. Devon and Shirley eventually travelled to Hector, Minnesota, where Devon began his teaching career. Once Shirley's daughters were in school, she took a teaching position at St. Mary's Catholic School in Bird Island, Minnesota where she taught 1st grade for 28 years before retiring. Devon and Shirley had an abundance of talent and creativity that lead them to a very successful part-time home business. Framing pictures for Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever was just a start as they continued to build their business creating hand-made wooden items, which they sold on weekends and in the summer months to people all over the country. Shirley's husband, Devon, passed away in 1998. Shortly after that, Shirley's two daughters, Julie and Amy, who relocated to Twin Falls to take job positions, moved her to Twin Falls to be close to them. Shirley missed her family and friends in Minnesota so much, however, once she joined some local Bridge Clubs and made new friends, she was happy to be in Twin Falls with her two girls and Devon's family. Shirley is survived by her daughters, Julie Squire Delia and Amy Squire Jenkins, both living in Twin Falls. Her sister Helen Pederson of Hoffman, Minnesota, son in-laws Shawn Jenkins and Frank Delia, both of Twin Falls, one step-grandchild, Scott Williams Jenkins of Boise, sister and brother in-law Jan Squire Beal and Jim Beal of Twin Falls, as well as nieces and nephews, Charles Olson (Joan) of Smyrna, Georgia, Mike Pederson (Delida) of Barrett, Minnesota, Faye Pederson Haraldsen (Don) of Des Moines, Iowa, Laurie Beal Kaufman (Steve) of Boise, and David Beal (Corina) of Queens Creek, Arizona. Shirley was also a great aunt of many who loved and will miss her dearly. Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Devon Squire, parents, John and Alice Olson, brothers, William and Julian (Buddy) Olson, father and mother in-law, Charles and Edna Squire and step- grandchild Jonathan Delia. Shirley will be missed by all as she was a very loving, compassionate person to all who met her, as well as a pretty close to perfect mother. As we all struggle through life with certain weaknesses, it is important to know that Shirley had so many strengths which brought comfort and joy to all who knew her. There will be a Memorial Service honoring Shirley's life well-lived on Wednesday, January 28th at 11:00 AM at Parke's Funeral Home, as well as in Hector, Minnesota where she will be laid to rest with Devon, her husband of 41 years, at a date yet to be determined.
