Nellie Ellen Duncan Berry, 91, of Twin Falls, Idaho, was called home upon June 3, 2014, at St. Luke's - Magic Valley Medical Center. She died of pneumonia. Nellie was born upon April 27, 1923, in Okemah, Oklahoma, to Clarence Everett and Berta (Bacon) Duncan. As a child Nellie moved with her family following her father's employment in the oil fields, from Oklahoma to Missouri; then to Kansas; and, then back to Missouri, where she finished her schooling. While in West Plains, Missouri, Nellie met and fell in love with a handsome young school teacher, Clyel Jarrett Berry. Nellie and Clyel were married upon October 16, 1939. Their first child, Velma Jean, was born in West Plains. Two years later their second daughter, Treva, came along. Their third daughter, Wilma, was born two years following. Clyel and Nellie moved their family to Idaho, where they farmed. Nellie worked side-by-side with Clyel, and was very proud of the fact that she could make straighter rows than him. After a few years, they bought a dry goods store in Eden, Idaho. After a few years they sold their store to return to farming, in the Kimberly-Twin Falls area. It was during this time that their son, L. Clyel, was born. After farming together for several years, they bought Consumer's Market, south of Twin Falls. Their business grew and they built a bigger store, Berry's Market. For the next 50 years they spent 6 days a week meeting customers and making friends, before closing the store shortly following their 70th wedding anniversary. Nellie was a very good seamstress and loved to sew for her children and grandchildren. She was also an accomplished cook. Her favorite Sunday meal to share with their family was her famous fried chicken. Nellie also loved to go fishing and camping with her family, and spent many holidays at Silver and Stanley Creeks. She is survived by her daughter, Velma Jean Porter, of Shoshone; her son, L. Clyel Berry (Jill), of Kimberly; two son-in-laws, Jules Harrison of Poulsbo, Washington and John Thompson, of Buhl; one brother, Clarence Duncan (Kathrine) of Florida; and, 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Nellie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Clyel; two daughters, Treva Harrison and Wilma Thompson; and, two brothers, Burl E. Duncan and George Duncan. The funeral will be held upon Friday, June 13, 2014, at 2:00 p.m., at Parke's Magic Valley Funeral Home, in Twin Falls. Internment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., upon Thursday, June 12, together with the one hour immediately preceding the funeral. The family would like to thank Dr. Richard Sandison; the fourth floor nursing and medical staff at St. Luke's, for their amazing compassion and kindness shown Nellie and her family; and, Chardonnay Assisted Living, in Twin Falls, which she called home for the last two years.
