Martha Eloise Newbry

January 28, 1915 — March 3, 2014

Martha Eloise Harman Newbry 1915 ~ 2014 Martha Eloise Harman Newbry, 99, passed away peacefully and with dignity at Bridgeview Estates on March 3, 2014. Eloise, as she preferred to be called, celebrated her 99th birthday on January 28, 2014 with a surprise party hosted by her son, at Bridgeview Estates with family and friends. Born in Joplin, Missouri on January 28, 1915, Eloise was the eldest of four children of George B. Harman and Addie Mae Sims. She attended school in Joplin, Missouri and was Vice President of her class. She graduated from high school in Venice, California. Soon after arriving in Twin Falls, Idaho, Eloise met Thomas F. Newbry. Her friend conned her into visiting Tom, who was sick with the mumps. However, Eloise was still fond of her boyfriend from Joplin and wanted nothing to do with Tom. But Tom was infatuated with Eloise and finally won her affection. Tom and Eloise were married on July 5, 1933 in Gooding, Idaho. To this union they welcomed their two boys, Thomas F. Jr. and William R. Newbry. Tom was employed by Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph and when the depression hit, he was laid off. He and his brothers moved to northern Idaho to work in the wheat fields. Mom accompanied Tom and his brothers to help the farmer's wife prepare the farm hands meals. They lived in a tent with a wood cooking stove in the farmer's yard. The farmer's wife took Mom to the general store to get orange crates to use as her cupboards in the tent. When Dad and Mom returned to the Magic Valley they resided in Buhl, Idaho where they belonged to the First Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a Den leader for the Cub Scouts. Eloise was Worthy Matron of Buhl Chapter #38 Order of the Eastern Star in 1955 and was a member for over 50 years. After moving to Twin Falls, Idaho Eloise was employed by the Idaho Department Store as the ladies department buyer. She enjoyed her buying trips to Chicago, Los Angeles, Denver and Salt Lake City. She knew her customers well and always found the clothing that they would like. She retired with 22 years of service. She was a member of Valley Christian Church. After retirement Mom and Day loved to go fishing in their boat and camping in their motor home. Eloise especially enjoyed deep sea fishing at Westport, Washington. She also enjoyed the family's annual deer hunting trips where she would cook up the best camping meals. Eloise also enjoyed her trips to Jackpot and usually was very lucky. Mom loved to cook and bake, winning many awards and cooking contests in the Magic Valley and at the Twin Falls County Fair. She made a cookbook for her grandson Sean as she shared her joy of cooking and making many great meals with him. Eloise also shared her recipes with friends and grandson Brad. Eloise is survived by her son William (Bill) and Thelma Hopkins Newbry of Pocatello, Idaho; daughter-in-law, Nina Palmer Newbry of Wendell, Idaho; her grandsons: Sean Newbry of Pocatello, Tim Newbry and Brad and Molly Newbry all of Twin Falls, Mark and Ann Newbry of Jerome, Scott and Marguerite Newbry of Gooding; 10 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Tom, of 69 years, her eldest son, Thomas F. Newbry Jr., her parents, her sister Mildred Peterson and her brothers George Jr. and Harold Harman.
