August Henry Vogeler, III August Henry Vogeler III passed away July 24, 2013 after a prolonged battle with myelodysplastic syndrome. He was born December 24, 1930 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of August H. Vogeler, Jr. and Mary Brake Vogeler. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Nancy Vogeler Dales, and his son August H. Vogeler IV. Gus Vogeler grew up in Salt Lake City; Jerome, Idaho; and Elko, Nevada. He graduated in 1953 from the University of Colorado at Boulder where he dual majored in Economics and Politics. After college he served in the U.S. Army. Following an honorable discharge, Gus was recruited by the Secret Service but chose instead to join his dad at Nevada Freeport Storage Co., the family business in Elko, which he eventually owned and managed. Upon returning to Elko, Gus fulfilled his boyhood dream of becoming a pilot. He owned four airplanes over the years, eventually earning his IFR and twin-engine ratings. Gus married Phyllis McKenzie in 1958. They raised three sons, Gus, Roger, and Kyle, in Elko. They later divorced. A medical concern prompted Gus to seek advice in Cape Town, South Africa and while there he booked a safari which set him upon a course to hunt in South Africa 22 times. He hunted and fished on six continents and his collection of hunting trophies were donated to the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum in Provo, Utah in 2002. After retirement Gus lived in Hawaii, Idaho, Utah, and Nevada. He loved outdoor adventures and continued his hunting and fishing pursuits until health issues intervened. Gus was a Life Member of Safari Club International, SCI Patron's Club and Quarter Century Club, and a past member of Lions and Rotary. He was a member of the Keauhou Kona Yacht Club in Hawaii and the Jerome Country Club in Idaho. Gus was known for wearing colorful Hawaiian shirts and a Hawaiian motif bow tie and cummerbund with his tuxedo. In 1995 Gus married Elaine Martin in Bazaruto, Mozambique. They traveled there to attend an Invitational Marlin Tournament and Gus won a new bride plus second place in the tournament. They returned one year later on their anniversary to participate in the same tournament and he caught two marlin on the same day, each weighing over 400 pounds. He is survived by his wife, Elaine; two sons, Roger and Kyle; grandchildren Michael, Kayla (Hobson), Brittni (Hyzer), and Alyx; and his former wife. Elaine's children Jamie Martin, Becky (Harper), Stephanie Martin, and their families were also very fond of Gus and mourn his loss.
