Roy Ernest Porter, 59 of Meridian, passed away suddenly at his home on February 6, 2013. He was born on March 6, 1953 in Twin Falls, Idaho the son on Lewis and Arlean Morton Porter. Roy grew up around mechanics, hanging out at his father's shop - Kimberly Motors. Through this experience he learned to repair small motors. He also earned the nick name Tuffy as child. Roy was also active in the Boy Scouts, attending the National Boy Scouts Jamboree held in Idaho in 1969. He graduated from Kimberly High School in 1972. Throughout his college years, he worked for the US Forest service. During his work at the Forest Service, he loved to wake campers up a night and make them put out their camp fires. Roy also worked on the fire crews while with the Forest Service. Roy attend college at Boise State University graduating with a degree in criminology. He attended the POST Academy and went on to work for the Ada County Sherriff's Department. Roy eventually became the Chief of Police for Meridian. He loved the job but hated the politics. Roy married Kim and took on the duties of being a stepfather to her two children. He love being a family man, but they later divorced. The struggles of his job culminated in him becoming and Alcoholic. He recognized his weakness and sought help through AA. Roy was not the poster child for AA, he could bring a whole new meaning to falling off the wagon, but always found the commitment to go back to AA. Roy eventually left the Meridian area retuning in 2009. He reestablished his life, got a job he loved and was finally enjoying the area where he was most comfortable. Roy loved the outdoors. When he was six or seven he pack into the Middle Fork with his family on Donkeys. He enjoyed the yearly family campouts on the South Fork of the Boise River, as well as hunting in the Selway with his father and friends. Roy also treasured deer hunting in the south hills with his step-sons Matthew and Ryan. He often reminisced about hunting trips where they nearly got snowed in. He was a master of many talents, he could over haul your car, remodel your house, make your lawn mower run, program you cell phone, make you a computer system, fix your sprinkler system and cook you a good meal. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Roy is survived by his sister - Naomi, sister in law Velma, step sons - Matthew and Ryan, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, along with his AA family. He was preceded in death by parents, and a brother - David. Roy had a love for animals and the family requests memorial in his name in lieu of flowers to the Humane Society of the charity of your choice. A Celebration of life service will be held on Monday, February 11, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Parke's Magic Valley Funeral Home, 2551 Kimberly Rd. in Twin Falls.
