Douglas Nelson

Douglas R. Nelson, 87, passed away at Rosetta Assisted Living Center in Twin Falls on Saturday, December 8, 2012, following a long battle with dementia. This coming January, Doug would have been 88 years old. He was born on January 2, 1925, in Kadoka, South Dakota, to Niel and Bernice Nelson. The family moved to Utah in 1942, where Doug attended school and eventually entered the United States Army,where he served as a mortar Squad leader in France and Germany with the 70th Infantry Division until his separation on November 1945. He was awarded the bronze service star. After returning from the Army, Doug attended the University of Utah earning his Bachelor's degree in Accounting. He married Audrey Burningham in 1948. To them were born four children: Robert, Kirk, Ann, and John. They later divorced. Doug married DeOnne Smith in 1997. Throughout his employment years, Doug was employed by several companies; i.e., Morrison Knudson, Monsanto, Leonard Construction Company, to mention a few. He retired in 1987. Doug enjoyed golfing, hunting, and traveling. Survivors include his wife DeOnne of Twin Falls, Idaho; and children--Robert (Suzie) Nelson of Soda Springs, Idaho; Ann Lawrence, of Sandy, Utah; John Nelson of Draper, Utah; Whitney Smith of Twin Falls, Idaho; seven grandchildren-- Tyler, Casi, Ryan, Krystyl, Taylor, Zoey B, and Ryder; five great-grandchildren; his two sisters-Joan Smith of Bountiful, Utah, and Nancy Michelson of Cave Creek, Arizona; sister-in-law Ruth Nelson of Tracy, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Gerald, and his son Kirk. Cremation will be handled by Parke's Magic Valley Funeral Home. No services are planned with respect to his wishes.
