Roy Lester Short December 21, 1921 - September 6, 2012 TWIN FALLS Roy L. Short died peacefully at his home in Twin Falls on Thursday, September 6th at the age of 90 due to complications from Alzheimer's disease. Roy was born December 21, 1921 in Noble, Missouri, the 6th of 11 children of Horace & Pearl Short. A few years later, the family moved to Rupert, Idaho, when Roy grew up, attending the Empire School and farming in the area. Roy joined the army in 1942, serving in combat in Europe in WWII as a rifleman, and then as a military policeman during the occupation of post-war Germany. Before being shipped overseas, Roy was sent to Miami, Florida for basic training, where he met his future bride, Irma Sirman. They corresponded while Roy was serving in France and Germany, and were married on August 4, 1946 once he returned home. Roy & Irma Short made their home in Twin Falls in 1946-1947 and then moved to Miami, FL, where Roy became a refrigeration mechanic. He became a member of Pipefitters Local Union 725 in 1952, qualifying as a master technician, maintaining the AC, freezers and cooling cases of many grocery stores in South Florida. Roy was a beloved member of the Magic Valley church of Christ, and he served as a deacon for over 30 years for the Central Church of Christ and the Sunset Church of Christ in Miami. He was a cheerful and tireless worker, using his mechanical skills to keep the buildings running and helping many widows in need. He worked in the church's disaster relief effort after Hurricane Andrew devastated Miami in 1992. Roy & Irma Short retired to Twin Falls in 1999. During Irma's declining health due to Alzheimer's, Roy remained at her side every day at the Twin Falls Care Center until her death in 2003. As Roy's dementia progressed, his son Clyde moved to Twin Falls in 2006, caring for Roy at home until his death. Roy remained cheerful, gentle and loving. Roy Short was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and by seven siblings. He is survived by his 3 sons and their wives: Larry & Louann of Homestead, FL; Clyde & Lisa of Twin Falls and Randy & Carrie of Abilene, TX. Also, Roy leaves behind 3 brothers and their wives: Hugh & Naomi Short of Rupert; Paul & Barbara Short of Twin Falls and Calvin and Sherry Short of Sandy, Utah, as well as dozens of nieces and nephews. The family expresses its appreciation to the staff of Visions Home Health and Hospice for their care; to Dr. John Baker and his staff; to Michelle Capps and Diane Henderson for years of tender service to Roy; to Andrea Jones for 9 years of compassionate PT and wound care and to Sherrie Sanders for 13 years of help and support for Roy. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 15, at the Magic Valley church of Christ, 2002 Filer Ave. E., Twin Falls, Idaho. On Monday, September 17th, at 11:30 a.m., there will be a graveside service at the Rupert cemetery. (Parke's Magic Valley Funeral Home) When he breathed his last gentle breath here on earth, Roy did not "go to meet the Lord." He met Him years ago. He walked with him through good times and tough ones, and left me an example to follow of one who was a servant to all.
