Lawrence Ivon Golay 1925 ~ 2012 Lawrence Ivon Golay, 86, of Twin Falls, died at home September 10, 2012 at his request under the care of Visions Hospice, his son, Brent, and daughter, Judy L. Brown. He was born October 7, 1925 number 10 of eleven children to Eugene and Millie Golay in Conda, Idaho. His parents were dry farmers, and his father was also a black smith and range rider that kept the peace between the sheep men and cattlemen in the Soda Springs area. His father, Eugene, was killed by a horse in 1934 when Dad was only 9. Grandma and the younger children moved to Twin Falls to be near his two older sisters, Esther Rosen and Francis Rosen. They bought 10 acres by the Amalgamated Sugar Factory and lived there until Dad enlisted in the Navy in 1942. He learned to be a Machinist Mate at Logan University where the Army sent him. He decided he didn't want to go into the Army so he came home to Twin Falls and enlisted in the US Navy and because he was only 17 Grandma had to sign for him to go in. He was stationed in the South Pacific during most of World War II serving aboard LCI's. He went to work for the Sugar Factory when he returned from the Navy and helped build the silos because he wasn't afraid of heights! He also worked on the donkey engine (switch engine) stoking it with coal; he liked working outside. He did various jobs around the valley; helped farm at several places and eventually decided he liked doing carpenter work which he learned from his father-in-law, Carl Hafer. He leaves a legacy of many homes he built around the Magic Valley, and even Nevada. He truly was a craftsman. He met Helen L. Hafer when he returned from the Navy and decided she was the one for him! His sister, Orelene, and Helen were good friends so the introduction was easy. They were married March 7, 1948 in the First Methodist Church, Twin Falls, ID. To this union came three children, Judy (1949), Brent, (1951), and Mark, (1953). In 1958 they moved to their present address on Blue Lakes Blvd. So. where Dad did many renovations to the old house. The only original item in the house is the kitchen window! He retired in 1990 and he and Mom were able to travel and see part of our country and visit various relatives. He is survived by Judy (David) Brown and Brent I.Golay, Twin Falls; grandchildren, Trevor (LeeAnn) Tarter, Jayd and Reilly, Twin Falls; Zach (Lisa) Tarter, Maddy and Macy, Wolfeboro, NH; Tiffany (Chad) Hendricks and Grayson, Pocatello, ID; Hannah (Cory) Albertson, Watertown, NY; and Mark I. Golay, Twin Falls. Also, his lone surviving sibling and husband, Orelene(Glen) Petersen , Rathdrum, ID. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, of 57 years in 2005 and his son, Mark D. Golay in 1990, and his siblings, Elmer, Esther, Francis, Willis, Raymond, Clifford, Alice, Delilah, and Robert and their spouses, and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Steve, Carl and Todd from Hospice Visions for their tender love and care during Lawrence's final days.
