Roland Long Gardner, 87, went to his final rest Wednesday, July 11, 2012 following an extended illness. Roland was born in Aberdeen, Maryland on May 7, 1925 to Pernell and Glenola Long. Orphaned at 7, Roland went to live with his uncle. He was always a tireless worker and worked on the family farm, hunted, fished, trapped and caddied golf while attending school. He met the love of his life, Cecile Willingham, while attending Aberdeen High School. After graduating in 1943, Roland enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was involved in seven invasions as a Radioman on the LST 990. Roland married Cecile on August 7, 1948. He re-enlisted in the US Army and served in Korea and Vietnam. Roland served with the 1st Air Cav in Vietnam and was very proud of his association with that division. Upon retiring from the US Army after 30 years of service, Roland was very active in civic organizations including the American Legion, VFW, and the Masonic Lodge. Roland served as American Legion Department of Idaho Commander in 1993 and held numerous leadership positions at the state and local level. He was very active with the Magic Valley Veterans and the Veterans' Cemetery in Hansen. Roland loved to be active. He gardened, golfed, and spent countless hours on community service. Roland is preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters, his daughter Kristin and his grandson William. His is survived by his wife Cecile, his daughters LaVerne Knight and Kathyrn (Clark) Muscat, six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He will be sorely missed. A viewing will be held Sunday, July 15 at Parke's Magic Valley Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. A service will be held Monday, July 16 at 10:00 am, also at Parke's. Internment will follow at Twin Falls Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff of Bridgeview Estates Assisted Living and Hospice Visions for the love and care given during Roland's final months.
