Rulon Richard Young Jr.

August 12, 1957 — January 13, 2012

Rulon Richard Young, Jr, born August 12, 1957, passed away at home on January 13, 2012, surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer. Junior was the first born child to Rulon R. "Dick" and Delila L. Malcolm Young. He grew up in Salmon, spending much of his time in the outdoors hunting and fishing. In 1975 he graduated from Salmon High School intent on going to Idaho State University to study Pharmacy. In 1979, while working at Rexall Drug in Salmon to earn his pharmacy clinic hours, Junior met the love of his life, Dora Kathleen "Kathy" Nichols. Junior and Kathy were married in the Episcopal Church in Salmon on January 24, 1981. The couple moved to Pocatello where Junior continued his studies. In May of 1982 Junior graduated from Idaho State University with a Bachelor of Science degree. After taking and passing his exams, Junior was able to practice as a Pharmacist. For several years he worked as a pharmacy manager, training and guiding new pharmacists and technicians as they embark on their career. Later in life he chose to work merely as a pharmacist in an attempt to escape some of the stress and responsibility of managing a pharmacy. He maintained an active license until his death. Junior and Kathy welcomed a first daughter, Kristina Elizabeth, into the world on July 3, 1984. The family later made a move from Challis, Idaho, to Mountain Home, Idaho, where Junior was able to get a job as a pharmacist in a local supermarket. Shortly after the move, a second daughter, Paula Kathleen, followed on November 14, 1987. The family of four grew and flourished in the desert weather of Mountain Home. Ever the outdoorsman, Junior became active in a number of local clubs and associations, including the NRA, Rocky Mountain Elk Federation, Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.), Ducks Unlimited, and the Hawg Hunters, a bass fishing group based in Mountain Home. Though Junior left the Salmon area for life and employment in another part of the state, his heart remained in the Lemhi valley, deep in the mountain trails and streams he used to hunt and fish in all through his life. His hunting and fishing took him to many different areas including Montana, New Mexico, Nebraska, and even Quebec, Canada, for hunting, and Alaska for deep sea fishing. Junior was proud of his travels, but towards the end of his life, he only wished to return to the one place he knew as home: Salmon. Junior was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Charlie and Bessie Malcolm, paternal grandparents Rulon and Leona Young, mother Delila Young, and father-in-law George B. Nichols. He leaves behind a wife, Kathy Young, two daughters, Paula (Eric) Zunno of Cannon AFB, New Mexico, and Kristina Young, of Salmon, father Dick Young, of Salmon, sister Ty (Ben) Garechana, of Salmon, nieces Marisa Garechana and Ciera Garechana, mother-in-law Bonavere Nichols, also of Salmon, as well as aunts, uncles and several close friends. Junior asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Hospice of Salmon Valley, or the donor's favorite charity.
