Jacob Eugene "Gene" Myers Born on January 2, 1942, in Washington DC, to Jacob E. Myers and Alma Rebecca Beaman Myers, Gene grew up in Oakland California. He graduated from Bishop O'Dowd High School and went on to study Animal Husbandry at California State Polytechnic College (Cal Poly) in San Luis Obispo. In 1963 he joined the Navy as an officer and was stationed at Coronado, Ca. He served off Vietnam on the USS Monticello, LSD 35. After the navy he was trained as a loan officer for the Bank of America and worked in banks in the Sacramento Valley. His conservative belief about loans led to a break with the bank. He left the bank and moved to Visalia, Ca to work for the health department as a sanitation officer ("privy sniffer"). He moved to Buhl, Idaho in 1972 with his mother and sister. In Buhl, he started a dairy. He took great pride in his breeding program and promotion of the diary industry in the Magic Valley. In 1977, he moved to a dairy outside of Twin Falls where he lived until 2003. He was active in the Grass Growers Association in promoting grazing of dairy cattle rather than dry-lot feeding. After suffering two strokes and a head injury he had to give up his dairy and eventually moved into Elie House where he lived until his death on January 7, 2012. In Buhl he was active in the church community of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Buhl. He studied and further developed his spiritual beliefs while attending classes at the Priory in Jerome. He was active in the cursillo movement. Gene enjoyed his work with the Catholic youth in Idaho. After moving to Twin Falls he became active in St Edwards Catholic Church. He enjoyed his daily trips to "Curry" to keep up on the local gossip and farming news. Throughout the Magic Valley, he was well know for his laugh, Gene is survived by his sister, Alice Myers, Oregon City, OR. A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 11:00 AM at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Twin Falls, Idaho followed by inurnment at the Twin Falls Cemetery with a reception in the church hall following the inurnment.
