Helen Moss Shaner

August 7, 1928 — January 3, 2012

Helen Moss Shaner 1928 - 2012 Orem, Utah: Our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Helen Moss Shaner, died peacefully in her daughter Penny Broderick's home surrounded by her children and grandchildren on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012. Carl and Helen Shaner were long-time residents of Twin Falls, Idaho where they lived for 51 years. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl Jr.; sister, Lael and her brother, Merlin. She is survived by four siblings: Joel Moss (Audra), Reed Moss (Elizabeth), Rhea (Jerry Wray), and Ruth (Don Johnson); her five children: Helena (Leonard Langford), Russell (Dori), Gaylinn (Mark Thompson), Penny (Kimball Broderick), and Erick (Kimberli); 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Helen Moss was born in Ririe, Idaho on August 7, 1928 to John and Zelma Moss. Helen was a brilliant student and gifted musician and pianist. She began using her talent on the piano in church and at school at the age of ten. She played the organ in church for many years. Helen graduated from Ririe High School with honors at the age of 16. She was co-valedictorian and voted the Most Outstanding Student. She later attended Rick's College and BYU. While at Rick's College, Helen worked as the assistant to the President of the college. Helen graduated with a B.S. in secretarial science from Rick's College. Upon graduation, Helen taught English, typing and shorthand at Rigby High School. She won honors and awards for her beautiful penmanship and her music throughout her life. Mom served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the US Northwestern States. Mom had a brilliant memory and was a knowledgeable gospel scholar who was very well-read and demonstrated a strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the way she treated others. Helen married Carl M. Shaner Jr. in the Idaho Falls Temple in 1953 and they moved to Twin Falls in 1955. The Shaners moved to their long-time residence on Blue Lakes Blvd in 1962. Helen lived in that home after the death of her husband (2002) and sold the home in 2006. She then began living with her son, Erick (Boise, Idaho) and her daughter, Penny Broderick (Orem, Utah) and their families until the time of her passing. Mom was a dear and loving Mother--always so tender, compassionate and understanding. She filled her home with love. She also taught them the importance of education and earning a degree. As a result of her influence, all of her children earned college degrees. She so enjoyed beautiful music and taught her children to have a great love and appreciation for music as well. At the young age of 36, Mom was stricken with a disabling physical condition which greatly restricted her physical abilities and freedom. She never complained of her condition and was always the most loving, pleasant and kind woman to everyone that she met. Her loving smile and pleasant conversation blessed and touched many lives. Even though Mom will not be with us here, her saintly example of Christ-like love, patience, and long-suffering will live on in the lives of her family and all those that were blessed to know her. We will miss you Mom. The funeral will be held from 12.30-13.30 on Saturday, January 7th at the LDS Meetinghouse located at 2085 S. Temple Drive, Twin Falls, Idaho. A viewing will be conducted from 10.30.00 AM until 12.30 AM at the same location. Interment at Sunset Memorial Park.
