Edward Dean Hartman
September 6, 1922-June 6, 2024
Ed's passing was truly a sad day, he passed four months short of his 102 birthday. As his granddaughter, I wanted to take time to remember Ed and how he had a life well lived, including travels with family and friends, friends from all walks of life and many stories about all the history he has experienced during his life. Right up to the end, Ed was really very mentally sharp and could tell you all about the history of the Magic Valley. He is survived by his nephew Brent Jacobs (Jenny), his granddaughter Angela Stahlman who was his caregiver and many grandchildren: Doug Stahlman (Marissa), Dan Stahlman (Kris), Kimberly Colsden (Dan Hill) and his great grandchildren, Greg Stahlman, Brett Stahlman (Bradi), Jessica Bunger (Seth), Brooklyn Adams, Derek Stahlman (Erika) and his great, great grandchildren, Jacob Stahlman, Anthony, Colton, Logan Bunger, Arianna, Pyper, Alarariah,& Khazelynn Adams, Asher Stahlman, & last but not least Raya and Reid Stahlman. Ed was very fortunate to have such an extended family.
Ed is preceded in death by his wife Millie in 2000, his daughter Linda in 2011, and his sister Mildred. Ed began his life being born to Helen and Emory Hartman and was the delight of his sister Mildred. He grew up on the family farm and was taught a strong work ethic by his parents, who encouraged him to always strive to do his best. Ed liked to tell the story of his first day of school where he decided within a couple of hours that he didn't like it, so he went home. He dad Emory (who was on the school's board) came in from the field for lunch, gave Ed a strong talking to, a good spanking and sent him back to school. Ed never missed another day of school and had the perfect attendance medal to show for it. Ed worked on the farm throughout his teen years. He did go to Albion Normal School for a couple of years taking business classes. Around this time World War II had broken out and Ed tried to enlist at 4 different induction centers and was told "no" by all due to the loss of his index finger in a hunting accident. He was very disappointed, but realized there were a great many things that needed done here at home and contented himself with that.
Ed met his future wife (Millie) while in the hospital in Wendell. eventually they began dating and soon were married. Ed & Millie had many happy years together. They were an instant family with the inclusion of Millie's daughter Linda. They had a small farm in Buhl and Ed eventually had to stop farming due to health issues. Ed eventually went to work for a local bank as a teller, worked his way up to vault teller, loan manager and then on to bank manager. Ed and Millie moved to many places when Ed was working for US Bank, as he was starting up new banks for them. My granddad liked to tell me stories of lessons he learned from his dad on how to fix thing and he was pretty handy in using his cane and other tools to help himself when working outside or getting things in the house.
In our eighteen years together, Ed and I shared alot of experiences; the loss of his daughter, and his sister, his good friend Effie Claytion, and various friends. We had good times and sad times. We had fabulous gardens and a beautiful yard and Ed worked hard at keeping them looking nice
My grandfather had a good heart, did a lot of things to help a great many people. He always worked hard for the various communities that he lived in, helped neighbors and family alike. Ed never knew a stranger and could talk to anybody and did!
Ed will be remembered by all of us for different things, whether it was his knowledge on various topics, his stories, his ability to make friends everywhere he went, or his great outlook on life. He will be missed by many.
A full obituary will be posted as it becomes available.
