Herman Fredrick Sievers passed away in his sleep on May 31, 2022 at the age of 94. He was born on April 27, 1928 to Margareta and Henry Sievers of Kimberly, Idaho. He has two older sisters and two brothers. In school, Herman enjoyed math classes and played the drums in the school band. He played football and basketball and was also a member of Boy Scouts. He was a graduate from Kimberly High School. While still in high school, Herman began working at the local sugar factory and for many area farmers. He worked for Henry Produce for over 11 years. He hauled potatoes, coal and beans, and baled hay in the summer. Herman met his wife, Barbara O’Halloran, a fiery redhead, while cruising the streets f Twin Falls in his 1949 Chevy. They kept in touch while he was in the army, serving in Okinawa during the Korean War. He was first assigned to the motor pool and later to the Post Office. He was honorably discharged in 1954. Herman and Barbara married in 1954. They began farming south of Kimberly shortly after. He farmed for Logan Belleville and his father Frank, moving on to the farm in 1955. He later purchased the land where he and Barbara lived in their later years. Herm enjoyed participating in research opportunities involving fertilizers, weed sprays and specialty crops like broomcorn. He repaired and rebuilt his equipment with the help of his son Tom. He helped neighbors by combining crops or driving truck- whatever they needed. His farm was important to him and he took pride in his crops. In his later years he worked to change to an irrigation system that simplified his watering needs. Herman was a member of St. Edward’s Church and served on the parish council. He helped with the harvest festivals and the Christmas baskets. He coached basketball, while his children were in school. He helped on many projects around the church and could be found cooking pancakes at a Sunday morning breakfast. During the fair he enjoyed serving food at the church booth. Herman was a member of the Knights of Columbus, who rose to State Deputy. He was the only State Deputy to serve four years. He served in many positions in the fourth degree. Barbara also enjoyed being in the Knights’ wives. Herman and Barbara traveled around the state and across the country meeting fellow Knights. They made long lasting friendships with Knights from other states, Prince Edward Island, and British Columbia. He has stayed in contact with many of these friends throughout the years. In 1965, Herman traveled to Guatemala in a truck carrying food, medical supplies, a saw mill and equipment to make shoes. He delivered the supplies to Father Tom O’Halloran who would teach the people in the villages he served to use them. While there, Herman spent time teaching the farmers to use a tractor to plant their crops. In his later years Herman was active in a group area of veterans who also suffered vision loss. He attended monthly meetings where they would discuss new technology for the blind and share experiences with fellow veterans. He enjoyed the opportunity to support the group by volunteering at informational events put on by the White Cane Program. He worked at the information table where the importance and use of a white cane was explained to those who were interested. Herman and Barbara enjoyed time with their grandchildren. They crafted toys for them when they were young and took them to see many local Idaho sites. Herman took them fishing and enjoyed the conversations they had. Woodworking was a hobby as was hunting and fishing. He and Barbara restored old round top trunks which were often gifts to family members. He made wooden baskets and spent time rebuilding his 1949 Chevy. Herman enjoyed sitting at the end of his driveway discussing with neighbors the current crops and what to plant in the future. He was always willing to share his thoughts. He was lucky to have family and friends who looked out for him. His neighbors were always there to lend a hand. Herman and Barbara celebrated 57 years together and raised three children, his family being the most important thing in his life. They raised their children to be problem solvers, to love the land, and to love and respect their families. He would not have accomplished the many highlights of his life without Barbara at his side. Herman is survived by his three children: Anne (John) Gay, Laurie Sievers, and Tom (Lynette) Sievers. He has seven grandchildren: Matthew, Christopher and Elizabeth Gay, Logan Sievers, Arron Phinney, Trevor Sievers and Victoria Alexander. He is survived by his brother Henry Sievers. He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara and infant son Herman James, his parents, his sisters- Johanna Brown and Margareta Mayer and his brother Gerald Sievers.
