John Harold Shobe, 91, of Hansen passed from this life on Sunday, November 24th at North Canyon Medical Center in Gooding surrounded by family and friends. He was born November 22, 1928 at Twin Falls, the only son of Harold and Martha (Stanger) Shobe. He attended the old country Bickel grade school riding horseback several miles from home to school. He also attended Eden grade school, Kimberly schools and graduated from Hansen High School in 1948. He played football, basketball and was a Golden Glove boxer. As a young man, he rode and broke horses for the Utah Cattle Company. One adventure he always talked about was when his Grandpa Shobe dropped him off at Dagger Falls and he rode his horse along the Middle Fork of the Salmon River Trail all the way to the Stoddard Bridge on the Salmon River. He also worked as a hunting guide in the Salmon River and Stanley areas. He had a fondness in his heart for his black horse Senator and sorrel horse Snake River. John met his future wife Dorothy Mae Steinmetz at a dance in Twin Falls and they were married November 22, 1948 at Elko, Nevada. They spent their lives working hard and managing several ranches/farms throughout the area and raised three sons and two daughters. His wife of 68 years passed away on April 21, 2017. John was proud to be a cowboy with his cowboy ways and was a horseman, hunter and fisherman. He served as Assistant Fire Chief in Hagerman in the 1960’s and was a Boy Scout Leader in the Hunt area. In later years, he worked as a ditch rider for the North Side Canal Company. He continued to ride, hunt and fish well into his 80’s and the neighbors would still see him mowing the lawn on his John Deere tractor. He loved to take a ride in the South Hills. A very independent man, he was living history with a sharp mind and will be missed much by family and friends. John is survived by his children Monty (Carol) Shobe, Rex (Amanda) Shobe, Linda Volkers, Diana (Doug) Adams and Byron (Ann) Shobe, 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, grandparents and son-in-law Dave. The family wishes to acknowledge the staff of North Canyon Medical Center for their excellent care of our loved one. Also his LDS Church family, his good neighbors the Johnsons and Codie and family. Funeral services for John will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 2nd at Parke’s Magic Valley Funeral Home, 2551 Kimberly Road, Twin Falls. A Celebration of Life will be planned for late spring or early summer. All services and arrangements are under the direction of Parke’s Magic Valley Funeral Home.
