Mary Elizabeth Smith Holbert of Birmingham, Alabama died suddenly on January 13th, 2022 in Twin Falls, Idaho while visiting her sister. Mary was born on December 20th, 1945 in Nitro, West Virginia to Fred Wilson and Ethel Clare (Morford) Smith. She was a 1963 graduate of Spencer High School in Spencer, West Virginia, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from West Virginia University in 1966. Mary worked as a Home Economics Teacher while completing Graduate degrees in Home Economics Education from The Pennsylvania State University in 1974, and Business Administration from The University of Pittsburgh in 1978. Her 30-year career in Corporate Marketing in the Banking Industry covered multiple institutions in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Birmingham. She retired from banking in 2009 and enjoyed traveling, visiting family, and she rekindled her creative interests. She was an active member of the Birmingham Quilt Guild. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Margaret Smith Sinnett, and brother, Frederick A. Smith. She is survived by her sister, Jane Smith Secrist of Idaho; her daughter Elizabeth (Betsy) Holbert Trively, son-in-law Martin Trively, granddaughters Clare, Anna and Mia Trively of Georgia; nephews Eric Sinnett, Chris Sinnett, and Fred Sinnett and niece Liz Sinnett all of California; Laura Clarke (George) of Alabama, Tracey Breski (Brandt) of Idaho; and many friends. Her ashes will be interred alongside her parents, grandparents, and extended family in Spencer, West Virginia in the future. Mary was smart, independent, generous, and creative. She was a lifelong learner and educator.
