Robert was born to Hugh Elmer (Doc) and Virginia Dean in Salt Lake City, on April 18, 1934. The Dean family settled in Burley, Idaho where Robert attended Southwest Elementary, before moving to Salt Lake for junior high and high school. Robert began his love affair with the violin in the school orchestra and was an active football player, making many friendships that lasted a lifetime. Attending the University of Utah after high school, Robert graduated with a bachelor’s in business administration. While attending university, Robert was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and received a commission in the ROTC as a 2nd lieutenant in the Military Police. Robert went on to reach the rank of Colonel in the Army Reserve and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his service. Returning to Burley after graduation, Robert eventually opened the Frost Top restaurant before completing Mortuary School in 1970, after which he served the community for many years as a funeral director. An encounter with a bear led in a roundabout way to Robert meeting the love of his life, Marcelyn Hammond, and their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in July of 1964.
In addition to being a loving and loyal family man, Robert had a passion for music, playing the violin and later the Viola, and was a founding member of the Magic Philharmonic Orchestra. Robert also loved the outdoors and flying and had many adventures in his airplane and in the mountains of Idaho. Robert was also an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Never one to stay idle, Robert expanded his love of music into renting and repairing instruments, building violins, and tuning pianos. Many happy years were spent at The Cabin, and many more evenings were spent playing Burley Rummy with his card club and family. Known in his family for making the best milkshakes, Robert was a man with a ready wit and a big heart who enjoyed many adventures while traveling with his family.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents, and survived, in his words, by his beautiful wife Marcelyn, his son Phillip (Stacy), his daughter Melanie, and his grandchildren JD, Tyler, Lindsay, and Lauren.
Robert is being cared for by Wilks Magic Valley Funeral Home in Twin Falls. Friends and family were remembered warmly by Robert until the end. Per Robert’s avowed request, there will be no funeral or graveside. The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff at Parkview, to Paul and Susan Young, and to Mike Parke for their love and care for Robert.
