Deane Callen, age 86, of Buhl, Idaho, passed away at home Sunday morning, April 26th. Deane was born to Carl and Mabel Callen in Jerome, Idaho on September 16, 1933. He attended Excelsior High School in Norwalk, California where he met his future wife, Phyllis. They were married on September 8th, 1951, and were happily married for 68 years. Deane was a local Idaho native, born and raised on a farm in Jerome, and moved to California in his teens, where he met Phyllis, the love of his life. He learned to fly in high school, earning his pilot’s license at 16, and flying and fueling planes for a local airport. He loved farming, camping and working on projects around the home. He worked hard as a truck driver, hauling hay and cattle in his twenties, then started driving a cement truck in his thirties so he could be home with his family more. Deane often took his family camping, fostering a sense of exploration and adventure for each of them. Deane had a lively interest in world events, and enjoyed discussions with his wife and daughters. Deane was predeceased by wife, Phyllis, his son, Russell Callen and oldest daughter, Debbie Callen. He is survived by his sister, Carla Mae Farmer of Long Beach, CA; brother Dale Callen of Bend, OR; daughter Cheryl Callen of San Marcos, CA; daughter Janice Callen of Mesa, AZ; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service is planned to be held with the family in summer 2021.
